If you are interested in another type of therapy which may help- there is a horse masseur called Melissa symonds - who I highly recommend. I know MANY people who have used her successfully in the treatment of all sorts of injuries including sore backs.

and I know as a human - when my back is bad i get more relief with massage than a lot of other treatments

her Number is 82809515. You have to leave a message and she gets back to you.
she is based in northern area.

My two cents worth, because I'm a hoof professional - some back soreness originates in the feet so make absolutely sure that his feet are balanced Very Happy

I prefer muscle work as well over chiro.

I second Clint Prior....

I use a chiro in the first instance.... Same as for myself, puerly because the Chiro works on bone alignment. Your bones are the frame for the rest of your body so if you bones are mis-aligned no amount of muscle manipulating or massaging will fix that, A chiro will fix that and once the chiro side is in order then i would look at massage if required.

I know that im my own personal experience my chiro is the only one who can fix me when something is out - Physio is good for torn muscles etc but i think the first thing you need to asses is bone alignment Smile

Just my own opinion from my own expereince Smile

I normally get some sports therapy done first, mine (therapist) will tell me if they need chiro or not, no point cracking something if its muscular. After chiro, get some massage done a week later.

PostSubject: Re: Chiro for my horse   Chiro for my horse EmptyWed Sep 12, 2012 2:15 pm

when i did my back in - I tore a huge bunch of muscle in my back which now tends to get knotty and develop trigger points if I am not diligent in stretching - and a chiro once said - i can't do anything till we get these muscles loosened off..most of probs are tight muscles pulling me out of whack - and when the muscles loosen off - MOST of the time I need no further aligning as my body settles back where it is supposed to be (instead of twisting round like a corkscrew) - but then - I am ODD - everyone says so.

When Ariel needed a chiro I had James Gardner - and I just wanted to eat him up - he was yummy.

OGM - OUCH!!!

James Gardiner is also VERY good from what i have heard Smile

Muscle issues that bad YES agree with what you are saying although my chiro will massage and manipulate to loosen until (generally over several sessions) he can manipulate the bone.... Therefor kinda getting 2 in 1 session hahaha, i think its all personal preference really - horses for courses Smile

I also agree with Fern,- if the hooves are unbalanced, then no amount of Chiro or Physio treatment will fix the problem, as their back will just get sore again as the horse isn't able to walk / move straight due to poor hoof alignment. -Jim Johnson told me this himself!!!!!!! Wink

Don't think Clint comes down this way.. But yea, he is also a genius Very Happy

Totally 110% agree with Fern. Whilst it is not always the feet, 90% of the chiropractic issues we see is a direct result of bad shoeing/trimming.

I think Clint knows his stuff but sometimes rushes. Sometimes he'd stay for an hour and fix all sorts of things, other times 5 minutes and he was outta there... but very very good and knew his stuff, he's a chiro.

Melissa is amazing! I highly recommend her! She's who I try and use if I need anyone. She uses a gel on them, no idea what it is but Dante LOVES it. She is also great because I noticed she is very individual depending on the horse.

Used Jim on my very messed up pony when I still rode her. He was good, haven't been in years but from what I remember great guy, knew his stuff and pony loved him.

As for Chrio v Physio... it depends on the problem. For me I generally go to physio. This is because I know how much of the anatomy works and unless I have a problem with something being out of alignment I won't touch a chiro with a 10ft pole. And chrio's who work without seeing xrays scare me to death. Having said this too my spine is twisted (thank's Dante!) but a physio fixed it all - he worked on fixing the muscles which fixed the back + made me strengthen THOSE muscles to support it, taking the pressure of the bones. I really don't like the thought of something 'moving bones around' that close to my spinal cord, no thanks. This is probably why I tend to use Melissa the most for my horses.

PostSubject: Re: Chiro for my horse   Chiro for my horse EmptyThu Sep 13, 2012 8:30 am

Interestingly enough, I had a physio out to Gracie the other day. She did her training in the US and goes back every 8 or so months for refreshers, and she says the way the horses skeleton is made up, and horses back's cant 'go out'. In her opinion, chiro is a bit of a gimmick.

She said horses dont have disc's in their back, and back soreness is only ever caused by the hind legs or associated muscles/ligaments. Therefore, if you work on those, the so called 'chiro' problem will be fixed!

Gracie was a different horse the minute she finished working on her! It was quite amazing.

We seem to prefer the Physio/pressure point treatments for our horses rather than a "bone cracking".

I personally recommend Gary Rees if you can get a hold of him

OGM I had to laugh - James is my chiro and a very good friend and I know a lot of people who had the same thoguhts as you lol he treats all of my family four legged and two Wink and has treated my childen since they were babies.

chiro wise you can't go past James but he is very, VERY hard to get to come out these days as he is extremely busy with his human clinic. Carli hanniford is trained like him and comes a close second in my books. Clint although good, I found to be a bit 'wham, bam, thank you maam' and I used to ask him to give pony the full body work not just the owie spot, where as the other two just do that first up

Massage wise we have one of our own in here - Clare - is her forum name and she is wonderful Smile

Hi there I am after the number of a good physio in the southern area. Had chiro out SEVERAL times and injury just keeps recurring...time to investigate further me thinks. He is located in Morphett vale so anyone who is that side of city would be good.
Thanks!

Can't go past Jim Johnson, not your side of town but he is absolutely fantastic and does not waste your time, and can see issues within seconds of seeing horse move.

I use Clint - find him to be fantastic, sorts the problem areas out with no fluff.... I base using a chiro for my horses on my own experience with chiros. Couldn't live without mine!!! And I always feel better for seeing him but I don't agree with chiro when it's not needed, I believe it's needed when there is an issue or injury but other than that I believe the body will look after its self....

Horses only need chiro adjustments at actual joints... Different to humans so generally it's polendorshouldewill be out Smile

After watching one horse see.... Chiros, physios, vets (xrays, nerve blocks, ultrasound, any treatment/ diagnostic method they could think of ) vet/farrier, farrier, farrier masseuse... Only to have Jim Johnson work out in about 5 mins, what the injury is, its likely source and treatment options... I would suggest him.

Shortly followed by Hayleigh Reid Lake Smile who worked wonders on Ney Ney. Smile
