Standie Wanted

Post by Terra on Sat Apr 11, 2009 8:22 pm

Righto well now knowing that Chief has a permanent home, and that I don't have Terra anymore etc....
I'm on the hunt for a Standie.
Bandicoot and Saltbush are helping me look for something suitable but I thought it wouldn't hurt to pop a thread up to see if anyone else out there knows of something!

Prefer under 6 years old. Will take a gelding over a mare. (No colts/stallions sorry).
Must be located within an hour of Adelaide for me to pick it up!
Over 15.2hh (I want to do jumping eventually). Had 'Classic Garry' bloodlines suggested to me, as they make good jumpers. (Will also be doing pleasure/trail riding, perhaps some encourage shows, dressage etc).
Not fussed on colour.
Prefer a trotter over a pacer, or at least a preference to trot over pace! (One that also displays a nice 3-beat canter would be a definite plus).
Doesn't have to have been backed yet, so can be just retired (happy to spell), too slow to race, etc etc.
Definitely need something sound (I've done the bowed tendon thing already, thanks lol).

I know it's a big ask but I would prefer a give-away, and I'm happy to give trainers etc references so they know their prized boy/girl is going to a good home!!

Not after a free lease sorry. I've realised spending time and energy on a horse only to have it taken away is too much for me!

umm if you lack confidence - go the pacer. As a rule they are much calmer.

Trotters on average are far more highly strung and are far more difficult to train to canter than a pacer in my experience. Don't be fooled as soo many are!

If your still gaining confidence, might pay to re-think Classic Garry bloodlines and steer clear of anything by Exotic Earl. Sure you get your quiet ones, but if they've had a tough time in racing, you'll have no hope with em if you lack confidence youself. Again you get the odd one, but they are few and far between when you take in the law of averages.

Sorry, had to think about that one.. LOL

Get confident, then get jumping... Smile

Hehe thanks Bandicoot!

Yeah my confidence DOES let me down on occasion.... Part of the reason I'm picking up that stock saddle next week! lol.
I've handled my auntie's fiery pony, and Terra who although is pretty damned quiet still had that 'fire.'
I've also been out riding with Zaddy lately and have surprised myself at what I can actually handle LOL. (Fiesty arab pissing off up a hill? Hell yeah! lol)
I just understand that there might be 'uhhhh...' moments that could let me down Sad Seem to be fewer and further inbetween the more riding I do though.

And yeah I had no idea about the trotter/pacer thing either! You learn something new every day.

Video of me on my auntie's pony lol, his second time ever jumping!

(Yeah I get left behind a couple of times, bloody small seated stock saddle LOL, oh wait, thats what I like! haha)

Interesting info Bandicoot :-)
We have a trotter and a pacer. Both love to jump (and both learning to canter) but the trotter is certainly far more highly strung than our pacer.
(Though the pacer only had one start, which probably contributes).

Good luck in finding what you're after Terra.
