| Yes they are about. Friend of mine saw two the other day while riding just on the arena. And yet people still walk around in shorts & thongs whilst staring at their mobile phones. | |

| big brave me hates snakes - especially after being told that every snake in our district is likely to be a brown one - and therefore - will kill me if it bites me - how frigging comforting. I am certainly being very careful about clearing piles of debris round the stables - and the new caretakers of Franks have cleared a lot of the rubbish - so hopefully we will have less snakes close by this season.

| I guess I am the only one here who loves snakes? I may have let out a few choice words when a baby brown fell on my head once (yes, literally my head!) but I still love them! In saying that, I haven't seen any where I keep either of my ponies yet and to be honest, I hope I don't. Snakes and horses don't mix, even if I do love both! | |

| No Binca, you aren't the only one. I don't mind snakes at all. Had the odd brownie in my aviary, couple of years ago. Snake came to trust me when I changed the water and fed the birds. It used to sun itself, in full view when I was no more than a foot away from it. Much to my disgust OH decided to despatch it once I got rabbits and guinea pigs- luckily snake was stunned only. I carried it in a bucket up to a far away paddock and released it. | |

Then you obviously have not seen anything /anyone die from an agonising and very painful death from a snake bite.. Anti venom does not guarantee you will live..

| Have already had 2 people come in to work with snake bite this year - we normally get no snake bite.
Because Anti Venom is so expensive and expires quicker than we sue it, we no longer keep it in stock. Had to retrieve a patient via medstar chopper who was quite unwell after baby brown bite.
Also, after seeing one of my cats dying from a snake bite years ago when the anti venom didnt work (it was administered 25mins after the actual bite - that we witnessed), I will never be on the snakes side!

| Better off coming across an adult than a baby, those babies just pump out all their venom rather than just a single dose like an adult. Kids, nothing but trouble! | |

| We've had 2 snakes already, 1 in the neighbors chicken pen which shares a side with out round yard and on the otherside the other neighbor has had one in there shed which is only metres from our wash bay
That's it I'm not going outside anymore this summer, I don't do snakes
We had a horse bitten by a snake about 10yrs ago at our old property, luckily got the vet in time but just the medication bill was over $1000.00 and he had that much stuff that the next day he was on such a drug downer that had to drag him to his feet! Go the vet out again to make sure he wasn't suffering and the vet said it's just like he's stoned because of all the drugs
He lived and was fine in a couple of days, but snakes are nasty.

My last summer on the farm, i gave up riding as i saw two snakes during one ride. It was an early morning ride, before the heat set in and it was November. We only did a lap of a 250 acre paddock which took about 20 minutes! 2 snake sightings in 20 minutes was too much for me!

| We found one just near the hay shed which is 5 meters from my horses yard (he's a little dead.now mind you after we took to it with a shovel) and my mare is kept at a place with the surrounding 200 acres are all cropped so now its almost time for bailing Im worrying about how many snakes are chilling out in the crops.

| Snakes go where their food is - in particular, mice. They'll be out in the grain fields after harvest because that's where the mice go. They come in around stables, etc., for water and mice. You can exert some controls by keeping areas clean and free of rubbish that attract mice and provide homes for snakes - of course - and don't put out milk or dog/cat food for pets - snakes seem to like this, too.
A friend has a deck, the underneath of which houses a family of brown snakes year round - but they no longer get any mice in the house, whereas before they were overrun - she says her dog goes to the edge of the deck and then jumps clear - he knows there's snakes there!
I've been bitten five times, four times by brown snakes and once by a red bellied black snake. Very lucky to survive the first time - the bites afterwards, well, guess I'd developed my own antivenene or something. Not pleasant experiences, lots of time spent in hospital. No, I wasn't clumsy, just unlucky.
I've never liked snakes, but now I am extremely respectful. Personally, I'd rather have snakes than mice - as long as they stay outside and keep to themselves, they're welcome.
