Do Perlino stallions throw colour with certain mares or is that only Cremellos?

Have a nice brown standie mare he'd cross well with, but hoping for colour (as in pally, buckskin etc).

Hey there Bandicoot Smile

Okies, Perlino is a double dilute on Bay, Cremello is a double dilute on Chestnut.

Roc has a Bay and a Chestnut as well as being double dilute - with the Bay being dominant over the Chestnut, he is Perlino Smile

EVERY single foal that Roc sires will have ONE copy of the dilute gene from him, and either a bay or a chestnut gene from him.

So over a Brown/Bay mare you would guarantee a Bucky or if the mare happens to have a Chestnut gene there, and throws that at the same time as Roc threw a chestnut, then you would get a Pally.

Guaranteed dilute every time with him no matter what to - just depends if you get the bay base producing a bucky or the chestnut base producing a pally Smile

What about liver chestnut and blacks or browns? They tend to through burnt(dirty) buckskins. Have you experienced this with your boy shell?

Natural service Bandicoot Smile We arent set up for AI yet unfortunately.

Well, you cant really guarantee the 'type' of buckskin you are going to get PH.....

A black mare, you would either get a bright buckskin, a black buckskin, or any other inbetween sort of buckskin OR a pally! Smile The advantage of a black mare is that you know she either has two black, or a black and a chestnut gene, so will depend which one she passes on.

A Liver Chestnut - you will either get a bucky or a pally.... any shade of either really......

Brown is the same as Bay chances wise - just doesnt have the agouti modifier that the bay does.....

What the agouti does is limits the black hair to the extremities......

A bay horse is a brown horse with agouti Smile Sort of.... lol....

With a bucky you would have a chance of either bay or perlino is that right?

Perlino stallion over Buckskin mare you would need to know if the mare has a chestnut gene at all?

If she does, you could get Bucky, Pally, Cremello or Perlino.

If she doesnt, you could get Bucky or Perlino Smile

Ok, so shes by a Perlino out of a Chestnut....

That means she has one Bay gene, and one Chestnut gene (Bay covers Chestnut so you get a 'bay' horse), and then has the dilute gene on top (Perlino HAS to pass on one dilute gene to each of its offspring).....

So.....

With Roc.....

You have a 25% Chance of Bucky, 25% Chance of Perlino, 25% Chance of Pally, and a 25% chance of Cremello. Smile

Ok, if the mare is Bay, it does not matter if her dad was grey... She DOES NOT have the grey gene, it is a dominant, ie if they have it it shows! It cannot be carried "hidden" So you can take any chance of a foal greying out of the equation if it's parents are not grey...grandparents don't matter!

One or the other! lol need more generations of pedigree colour to say...even then chestnut can stay hidden.....for MANY generations...look at CB's 400 odd years and the odd chestnut purebred still pops up once in a blue moon!

So from my limited studies from a bay when you put a perlino (Dble Cream) over her you are most likely to get a bucky.

Unless there is the random chestnut gene. When you may get a pally.

Where does the smokey black fit in?
