Cheapest Hay Southern Areas & Fodder Stores Empty
PostSubject: Cheapest Hay Southern Areas & Fodder Stores   Cheapest Hay Southern Areas & Fodder Stores EmptyMon Jun 18, 2012 1:13 pm

Hi all,

Just wondering which fodder store has the cheapest hay? After pricing for (in order of preference): Oaten, Wheaten, Meadow and wondering if any do a Lucerne mix (and how much if so)? I can't believe how much hay has gone up since I last had to buy it a few years ago! Would also need delivery so if it's pick up only, not going to be much use to me.

I rang Sandersons @ Coro Valley and got quite a shock to find Oaten and Wheaten small bales are now almost as much as Lucerne used to be! ($13.90 each).

Is the fodder store at Old Reynella still going? And the one at Hackham? (Think is was on or near Gates Rd?) Any others about (new or old?)

Seems it pays to be north if you have horses these days...cheaper hay, cheaper agistment Sad

everything is expensive down south from transport costs! Top Range feeds on willunga hill is really good and they deliver for a small fee.
For hay would pay to have it delivered from a grower in bulk amounts if you can. When you arrange agistment for your youngin' try and find other agisters who'd share a load with you. Paying transport and delivery is much cheaper than paying higher prices from small fodder stores.
Or borrow a ute from someone and do a trip to pick some up.
I buy rounds, I used whole ones when I had more, now I just feed them out my hay shed from them. Much cheaper to pull bits off each day than buying small bales. I'm lucky I have my own place and space to do this but ask around and see what you can share with others or what your agistment does and doesnt allow/have space for etc.

Yeah thats the prob Mahnew, most agistments will only have limited space for their agisters to keep feed, so buying bulk in most places is going to be pretty much a no go I think otherwise I would have done that, unless like you say, there are others willing to do the same, but thats not going to help me initially either.

I would love to get a round or two and just feed off those but they take up so much space in a feed shed for starters (so depends on agistment again) and even if you can do that or get it in, there seems to be pretty much no one selling them atm.

I found some Meadow Rounds at Coopers Mylor but they were $90! affraid I've paid between $40-50 for them in the past... If you can find cheap hay, it all seems to be pick up only Sad

I'm pretty sure Reynella & Hackham stores are still going. I've been getting my feed delivered from Walkers of McLaren Vale for the past 4 years. They've always been extremely reliable. Have no idea who'd be the cheapest.

I was lucky and had a friend of a friend selling basic meadow rounds for $30 and as I knew how rare that was I bought their last 10 bales and they came and delivered and stacked with their forklift in the hay shed...VERY lucky!
We have local growers down here in Yankalilla that still have a little bit and seem to be cheaper than town still so I dont know much about fodder shop prices sorry.
Goodluck Smile

And yeah Walkers are pretty reliable and well priced from what I hear

I heard through friends that Globe Derby feed store has a lot of rounds at good prices (lucerne rounds for 90) but dont know if they deliver. Top Range gets theirs from growers up north so you're paying them to get it then to deliver it....I hate paying twice for something you might get direct.
Theres a lucerne grower who advertises on Aushorse in Goolwa direction, they delivered to me at yank fairly cheap but that was 4 rounds so dont know if they'd be as cheap in smaller amounts

Have you checked out the myaushorse feed section? Smile Might be worth a try. Even go back to last years listings and ring the farmers to see if they have anything available.

It's getting harder to get hay now because it's almost time for new seasons hay again Wink

Well thats good and bad then! Bad cause I'm stressing without knowing I can sort something out now cause there is nothing much around (I hate being anything other than super organised!) but good because maybe by the time I get her some new stuff will hopefully be coming through!

Yep I have checked the feed sections of aushorse but nothing there pretty much. The last few ads are for ppl looking for hay which tells a tale in itself!

Exactly jellybelly Smile people don't realise that Wink

Like I said I think your best bet would be to call people that have previously advertised hay on there and they may be able to put you in touch with someone. Or an alternative would be driving around country areas and look out for hay in sheds and if you see some ask Smile

Top Range is really good - Kevin is lovely Smile He delivers too if you need it - though lately we have been just running up there and getting the boys to stack it straight into the float (which is the mobile feed shed at the moment! lol)....
